Utah is home to many pests, including four commonly seen cockroaches. There are over 4,500 species of cockroaches found throughout the world; giving everyone an opportunity to cross paths with these little grotesque insects. Despite the astonishing number of species, only 30 of them are considered pests and of those 30, the four common to Utah are the American Cockroach, German Cockroach, Oriental Cockroach, and Brownbanded Cockroach. At this time, we at Rentokil would like to take the opportunity to discuss the basics of German cockroaches; the most common cockroach found in the United States.

Where Do German Cockroaches Come from?

German cockroaches can quickly infest homes and businesses with their exceptionally rapid reproductive abilities; in a single year, one female can reproduce 6 generations. They can easily slip through a gap of only 3/8” wide found frequently along with structure, ventilation, sewer lines, and other means. Not only can they squeeze in through the cracks, but they are also introduced to homes and businesses by way of 2nd hand appliances, drink cartons, cardboard boxes, and grocery bags.

Identification of German Cockroaches

Though German cockroaches share similar characteristics, diets, and habits, their differences separate them from other species. German cockroaches have antennae and 6 legs, much like other insects that sprout from their oval bodies, which are varied colors from tan to light brown. They have 2 nearly parallel striped markings across their backs that start behind their heads. These cockroaches between ½” and 5/8” long and though they have wings, they do not fly.

Where Do German Cockroaches Live & What Do They Eat?

German cockroaches are omnivorous, meaning they will eat almost everything; examples include glue, booking binding, soaps, toothpaste, decaying matter, garbage, and human scraps. More often than not, cockroaches, much like other pests, intrude into homes and businesses in search of food, water, and favorable climates. German cockroaches prefer warm, moist areas to live, making bathrooms and kitchens the most likely areas to hunker down in.

Diseases & Health Problems Caused by Cockroaches

German cockroaches are more than a nuisance; they are a health risk and inflict damage to personal property. According to medical studies they easily agitate allergies and induce asthma attacks, especially in children. Not only do they impact the respiratory system for many, but they are linked to spreading at least 33 different strands of bacteria, 7 human pathogens, and 6 species of parasitic worms. Because of their nonchalant behavior, German cockroaches’ spines of the legs and bodies pick up germs and bacteria as they traverse through trash heaps, sewerage, decaying matter, and other such environments. They then spread these contaminates by walking across surfaces you prepare food as well as the food itself.
